Aviary goes International - Partners up with Mixi, Japan's Leading Social Network

Aviary+Mixi
Aviary+Mixi

It's been an amazing past 12 months for us and while we're absolutely ecstatic about our momentum, we don't plan on slowing down anytime soon!

Today we're excited to announce our partnership with Mixi, Japan's leading social network and communications infrastructure. With a heavy request from Mixi users for a photo editor, Mixi chose Aviary and has updated their iPhone application with our iOS SDK. This new feature now gives Mixi users the ability to add stylistic effects, adjust the lighting, apply text and more to each photo before posting it online for their peers to comment, react, and engage.

Founded in 2004, Mixi now boasts over 25 million users and is progressively innovating to stay on top of the market.

We're proud to work with a company that prides itself on compatibility and intuitiveness, and are anxious to see how their loyal community responds to the new feature inside their beloved network. Mixi will soon integrate Aviary inside their Android app, with plans to possibly adding it to their website in the future to create a seamless workflow across all their platforms.

This is a huge step for Aviary as we grow to become the world's leading provider of photo editing tools for both web and mobile.  This partnership with Mixi now allows us to have a better understanding of the Japanese market, their developer ecosystem, and what trends (both social and content) to look after. Today Aviary is localizable into any language, which makes us an appealing option for other international companies like Mail.ru and Zoomin, but what we hope to ultimately offer are tools and features that are popular outside of the US and more specialized to cater each market - we're very thankful for our current international partners who are guiding us.

1 Year. 1 Billion Photos Served.

Roughly a year ago, in mid-September 2011, we launched our mobile platform with 30 partners. We now have grown to 2,000 partners, including Flickr, TypePad, Box, MailChimp, SquareSpace, Imgur and many others. Collectively across our network, almost 20 million users interact directly with our photo editor each month. And we just reached a very important milestone in Aviary’s history:

billionedit_header

1 billion photos have now been edited on Aviary’s new platform within our first 12 months of launching. And on our current trajectory, we expect to double that number by the end of 2012.

Additionally, our international initiatives are beginning to gain traction as we seek to become the platform that powers the world’s photo creativity. We're thrilled to announce two new partners today to the Aviary family. The first is Mixi, Japan's largest social network. In the near future, Mixi’s users will be able to enhance and add fun effects to the photos they post directly from their smartphones. The second is my.mail.ru, one of Russia’s largest social networks.

Over the past year, we’ve also entered into strategic partnerships with a host of great companies, including Microsoft, Nokia, Walgreens, and others that we’ll be announcing soon.

I can’t believe it’s been a year already... thanks to our partners and team for making it an incredible one. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us in Year 2.

To access our editor:

  1. Tap on any photo to bring up the radial menu
  2. Choose the magic wand, and Aviary's Editor will slide up

Once you're done editing, you can also add a caption to each photo, apply a background color or pattern, and share your layout with friends and family via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. If you want to go back, Layout includes undo and redo, and best of all, you can store your projects in iCloud to share them with other devices.

Important Stickers Update to the Aviary iOS SDK

If you're using the iOS SDK, there's an important update to the build in regards to the sticker archives you should be aware of. Currently, the sticker archives in the iOS SDK are being stored in the Documents directory, which is backed up by iCloud, but as of late, Apple has begun to reject any apps storing things there that can be re-downloaded.

To solve this issue, we added an extra attribute to the sticker file to mark it as excluded from iCould backups.

Please see our release notes for more details:

https://github.com/AviaryInc/Mobile-Feather-SDK-for-iOS/blob/master/RELEASE.md#version-236---may-10-2012

Please download and update to the latest build to avoid any issues. You can grab it at aviary.com/ios.

If you have any questions, please feel free to send them to mobile@aviary.

Twitpic, a platform that allows you to share your photos and videos, has just announced the launch of their long awaited iPhone app, and has added Aviary's editor to the mix! They've taken advantage of the ability to customize the look and feel of the editor's user interface (nice!), and have chosen the 5 tools that they believe makes most sense for their users: Effects, Enhance, Crop, Orientation, and Brightnes.

Important UDID Announcement for Aviary's iOS SDK

If you're currently using Aviary's iOS SDK inside your app, there's an important update you should be aware of in regards to the recent report of Apple rejecting apps for accessing unique device identifiers (UDIDs). We don’t collect UDIDs, but the analytics library our SDK uses does access them. We do not expect the inclusion of this library, or of the Aviary SDK, to cause any problems with future versions of your app being accepted to the app store, but just as a precaution we have updated to the newest version of the analytics library which prevents UDIDs from transmitting in clear text.

Please download and update to the newest SDK (v 2.3.4) here:

www.aviary.com/ios

Note: You must be logged in to download the SDK.

As a nice bonus, the new version of the Aviary iOS SDK includes some color customization options, and higher resolution output (up to 3MP). You can read about all the new updates on our changelog. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email us at mobile[AT]aviary.com.
