A Holiday Present to Fans of Aviary's Retired Advanced Suite

Happy Holidays! I have some really exciting news for the fans of Aviary's retired advanced flash suite - specifically for fans of the cult favorite photo manipulation tool, Peacock. We granted its original developer, code artist Mario Klingemann, a license to continue development of Peacock independently. And in a show of holiday spirit, he got it ready for you on Christmas day. He has re-christened the tool as Nodewerk and turned it into an AIR application that can be downloaded and run directly from your computer, even without an Internet connection!

Just to give you an idea of the kinds of incredible images that can be made, check out this incredible Flickr gallery by former Aviator extraordinaire, Mike Peutz (better known as mpeutz). Click through for the full gallery.

All of these photos were generated from scratch using code alone.

And here's a tutorial video by Mike showing Peacock in action (please note that Nodewerk no longer connects to the Aviary website to let users edit each others' compositions).

Mike even built a beautiful website and forum to showcase and share your new Nodewerk creations.

On a personal note, I can't tell you how happy I am to be able to see an incredible piece of software like this rise from the ashes. Mario and the team that worked on Aviary's advanced flash suite worked so hard on Peacock and it's great to know that a true gem like this will be out there in the world helping to make the world a better looking place once more.

So what are you waiting for?! Go download it now and make beautiful things!

Welcome to Tobias Peggs, the new CEO of Aviary!

BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER

I'm excited to announce that Tobias Peggs has joined the Aviary flock as our new CEO!

Aviary is taking off in ways I never dreamed possible when we adjusted our strategy and launched our photo-editing SDK 15 months ago. We now have more than 25 million monthly active users of Aviary’s products, making their photos look amazing across our distribution network of 2,500 partners. We have an incredible portfolio of partners including large corporations like Yahoo!, Walgreens, Box and Twitter and many successful indie companies like imgur, PicStitch and Juicy Bits. One year after launching, in September 2012, we celebrated editing our 1 billionth photo. Just a few months later, we're now celebrating passing 2 billion edits. It’s been a great year. But we're just getting started...

As we move forward, it has become clear to me that the company's accelerating growth is now bringing us into territory that is best handled by someone with a very specific set of skills and experiences tailored to match our B2B strategy. Tobias has deep experience managing accelerated growth in B2B startups, which makes him the perfect leader for Aviary as it really takes off.

Most recently, Tobias was CEO at OneRiot, managing that company’s transition from consumer to B2B, overseeing its growth and subsequent acquisition by Walmart. There are many specific elements in his background that are highly relevant to Aviary’s business:

  • At OneRiot, he drove fast growth in the business through the distribution of SDKs and business models to a large community of developers.
  •  At Walmart, he was responsible for mobile products in international markets, growing the UK market from zero to 50% of typical weekly global mobile revenue inside 12 months.
  •  He has built and managed large teams across the globe, having previously worked in the US, Europe and Asia.

But beyond his understanding of our developer-focused business, also importantly, he understands what we are doing emotionally. As a former Managing Editor of i-D Magazine, he has a deep appreciation for photography and creativity, which is critical to our culture and mindset at Aviary.

Tobias has been a mentor of mine for almost a year now. Shortly after Aviary changed its business strategy to focus on powering third party apps, one of our investors, Mo Koyfman from Spark Capital, introduced me to Tobias. He had a wealth of leadership knowledge that really impressed me and helped me think through our approach to the business as we grew our partnership base. I am certain that those conversations helped steer Aviary towards its current level of success.

Going forward, I will be Aviary's Chief Product Officer, focusing on continuing to make Aviary's product offering the most innovative and pure solution on the market. And in my continued role as Chairman, I'll make sure the company course stays true on the path towards democratizing creativity.

I'm excited to get the opportunity to work even more closely with a mentor. It represents the opportunity to turn Aviary from a startup with incredible potential into a significant, growing business under Tobias' leadership.

So I'd like to officially welcome Tobias to the flock. We'll fly to great places together, as birds of a feather tend to do.

I JOINED AVIARY TODAY AS THE COMPANY’S CEO

I joined Aviary today as the company’s CEO, and I couldn't be more excited. Here's why:

Aviary has built the best SDK for photo editing, sharing and monetization. More than 2,500 developers already use that SDK in apps across mobile, tablet and web. In November, Aviary saw 25m unique end users across that developer network. On Thanksgiving Day alone, Aviary's technology helped edit and share more than 15m photos. Meanwhile the company has just topped 2bn total photos edited (up from 1bn as reported in September).

Those are big numbers, showing significant growth, and indicating real traction. Partners like Flickr, MailChimp and Walgreens agree, having integrated Aviary into their offerings. Last week, Twitter joined that roll call. Likewise, Aviary is the go-to photo platform partner for many and varied indie devs, including Muzy, Palringo and Recipe Search.

When you get to know the company, it's easy to see how they got to this position. A) the team that's been put together to date is awesome and B) the core product rocks. If you're a developer, and you're thinking "photos", you're likely thinking "Aviary".

For about a year, I’ve been talking with Aviary’s co-founders Avi and Iz about the B2B direction they’ve been taking their company. We’ve always clicked as people, and I love their big vision of democratizing creativity. Likewise we’ve talked for days about the business potential, especially in the context of a mobile photo space that already seems huge but is really only just getting started.

Last month, they asked me to join the company. Through our conversations, it became apparent that some of the experiences I’ve been through and the lessons I’ve learned in my career – especially when CEO of OneRiot – would complement Avi and Iz's strengths as they sought to scale their business and better serve their developer community.

One of the hardest decisions startup founders can ever make is to bring in an outside CEO. The fact that Avi and Iz were so clear on why they wanted to do that now was very impressive and compelling. In addition, having Mo Koyfman from Spark Capital as Aviary's lead investor was also a plus. Spark was the lead in OneRiot. They, like me, see the benefit in getting the band back together.

So here we are: Avi, Iz, me, a very talented flock at Aviary's NYC HQ, and a board full of brain power, ready to help our developer community create and monetize the best photo apps possible for their users, while taking this company to the next level and beyond.

I'd encourage you now to install Aviary’s showcase apps on iOS and Android to see the core product in action, and to start using the service through one or many of Aviary's partners. Also, keep an eye on the Aviary blog and follow Aviary on Twitter for more product, partner and feature announcements – there's a lot of very cool stuff just around the corner. Meanwhile, we’re hiring!

As I said, I couldn't be more excited. I feel very fortunate to be joining such a top team who’ve created a great product that is loved by so many developers and photo takers around the world. Now… it’s time to get to work.

Flickr Chooses Aviary to Power Photo Editing on iOS

On our mission to power the world’s creativity, we’re very excited about the most recent updates from one of our largest partners, Yahoo! For a few months now, we have been powering the photo editing tools for the Flickr website. We’re glad that our relationship with Yahoo! continues, amidst some major updates to the Flickr service. Today, Yahoo! released a brand new Flickr app for iOS. Their quest to offer a great mobile photo experience means another fantastic member of our partner community. Now, all Flickr users, on web and mobile, can make their photos look amazing with Aviary’s tools, filters and effects.

We’ve been working with Yahoo! for some time now to help ensure they are offering great photo editing tools and we’re excited to be a part of their services as they continue to evolve.

Aviary is Now Powering Twitter’s Photo Filters and Effects

We're extremely proud to announce that we're now powering the photo filters and effects for our newest partner, Twitter.

Aviary's mission is to democratize the world’s creativity. We accomplish this by helping millions of people express themselves through the photos they share every day: so it’s really fulfilling to partner with Twitter and give its huge network an even more powerful way to communicate. After several months of working on and testing these new features with the Twitter team, we’re excited to finally get them in the hands of the Twitter community.

Together we’ve created a unique experience that makes it easier than ever for people to create and share photos on Twitter, in real time. Each filter was designed from the ground up exclusively for Twitter, and we couldn’t be more excited about how they turned out. We designed these features so that it is very easy to add new and elegant filters to the photos that people share using Twitter’s mobile apps for iPhone and Android.

So we hope you enjoy our work. It's a significant feather in our cap as we continue to add to our distribution network of over 2,500 partners, who enable more than 25 million people to use Aviary's photo editing technology each month. Collectively, we have helped people edit almost 2 billion photos in the last year.

We want to power the photo editing experience of every mobile and web app on the planet.

Today, Twitter. Tomorrow, the rest of the world.

The Advanced Suite is Officially Offline

As per this blog post from July, we have officially closed the advanced suite of Flash tools (previously located at advanced.aviary.com) in order to focus on our new company direction powering the photo experience in 3rd party apps. While we hoped that everyone would have taken the time to retrieve their files since our notice, we recognize that the message may not have been seen by everyone. Therefore, if you were not able to retrieve all of your files to date, please contact us at support@aviary.com from the email address associated with your account to help retrieve your files. Do this quickly. Please note that after September 30th, 2012, we cannot guarantee that your files will still be available for us to retrieve.

While the tools will remain offline, we may continue to explore new homes in whole or in part, for specific elements of the suite. If interested in discussing, please contact us at partners@aviary.com with the subject line "Interested in Advanced Suite."

I would like to make a few recommendations for alternate tools to try:

  • Advanced Photo Editing (layer based) - GIMP
  • Vector Editing - Inkscape
  • Image Markup - Skitch
  • Audio Editing & Music Creation - GarageBand or Audacity
  • Node-based image editing (like Peacock) - watch this blog for more information...
I have a number of thank yous to make, but I'll leave out names because there are so many and I don't want to risk leaving anyone out:
Thank you to the Aviary staff who worked on the advanced suite, some still with the team and some not. You are some of the most ridiculously talented people I have ever met and I can honestly say you have set the professional bar higher for me for having gotten the opportunity to work with you.
Thank you to our wonderful moderation volunteers - our Aviators are amazing people who brought out the creativity in thousands of people, expecting nothing in return. I'll miss reading the Bird Bath newsletter.
Thank you to those of you who wrote tutorials, especially those of you who wrote and published 2 books on the advanced suite. How cool was it to go into a Barnes & Noble, and see it in print!
Thank you to the dozens of press outlets who covered the advanced suite. The tools would have gotten nowhere without you.
Thank you to those of you who gave awards to the advanced suite. We have the trophies adorning our coffee table in the office and we'll never forget the excitement when we won them.
Thank you to our investors, who helped us turn an idea into a reality and continue to back our vision of democratizing creativity in our current direction.
Thank you to our advisors who gave us guidance along the way in shaping the advanced suite.
Thank you to my co-founders, who made the advanced suite their driving mission in life while we worked on it.
Thank you to our families, who selflessly continue to put up with our long hours. Welcome to the 3 babies who joined our families while we worked on the advanced suite.
And most importantly, thank you to the millions of users who gave the advanced suite a try, especially those of you who made it your primary form of editing tools and for whom I know today represents a real loss.
I love all of you and hope we can continue making creative expression accessible for everyone in the world, going forward.
Best,
Avi

ADVANCED SUITE OF MULTIMEDIA FLASH EDITORS FOR ARTISTS WILL BE RETIRED IN SEPTEMBER

Hi folks, As you might know, Aviary officially changed directions in September 2011 to focus more on helping developers of photo apps. We currently power the photo-editing of third party apps on mobile and web through Aviary’s simple plugin for iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7 and HTML5.  Over the past 10 months since turning down this path, we’ve grown to 11 million active users, editing more than 150 million photos in Aviary, each month. And our tremendous growth under this new direction is showing no signs of slowing down. Even our developer showcase app “Photo Editor by Aviary” has been a smash hit, shooting up to #2 in iOS’s Photos category and breaking into the Top 25 free apps in the App Store (with a 5-star average rating).

This incredible adoption has proven to us that we are currently on the right path on our mission of democratizing creativity - making it possible for anyone, no matter what their talent or skill levels, to express themselves creatively. And it’s also clear that we need to continue to focus on this path and dedicate our development resources accordingly.

Since rebuilding our team late last year around this mission, we have effectively left the advanced suite of multimedia Flash editors for artists untouched, except for time spent fixing bugs (and with each new update to the Flash platform, there continues to be new ones introduced). With Flash’s general decline as a platform over the last few years, it is becoming more and more of a time sink for our team to fix and support these issues.

We therefore have made the difficult decision to retire the advanced suite of multimedia Flash editors for artists (located at advanced.aviary.com) on September 15th, 2012. Between now and this time period, you are encouraged to download (and/or export) any files currently residing on the system as they may not be available after that time.

We will unfortunately no longer be able to offer additional support for this suite between now and then, though you are welcome to continue to use it without support until it officially closes.

This is obviously a very difficult and sad announcement for us to make - much love, sweat, passion, investment and energy went into building our advanced suite of multimedia Flash editors. But our team, board and investors all recognize that continuing to support and develop a suite of legacy products on a platform that is declining would be a tremendous waste of resources, in addition to being too big a distraction to the success of our current focus.

To answer the obvious question: Will we rebuild the advanced multimedia suite for artists in HTML5 (or natively on mobile)? We have no plans at this time to do so. We feel that we’re currently on the right path to success and it would be too distracting to have to completely rebuild products from scratch that are off that path, at this time.

We have no recommendations for other editors you could use as alternative to our advanced suite of multimedia flash editors for artists right now, but will try to compile some closer to September when we send out a reminder notice. We do recommend that if you are a member of the artist community at advanced.aviary.com, you join the awesome community of artists at Worth1000.com.

To those of you inconvenienced by this announcement, I am truly sorry. I hope you understand why this is necessary and will continue to support the company on its current path.

Best, Avi

CEO / Aviary

=======================

EDIT ADDED JULY 25th, 2012:

A number of commenters have asked why this change was necessary (i.e. why can't we just leave the apps running unsupported?). I should have communicated that better in this announcement and apologize.

There are a number of reasons, which I'll illustrate here, but first, please realize that this announcement represented a last resort for us. If there was anything that logistically made sense we would not have made the decision to close the suite.

So why aren't we just leaving it running unsupported? There are a number of reasons, all important:

1) Lack of time / resources. Any time spent fixing bugs (or hiring staff to fix bugs), is time spent away from our new direction. The amount of work the suite requires to maintain is too big to sustain with incremental maintenance. Flash is constantly releasing new versions of their player. Browsers are constantly releasing new versions as well. Each change represents a potential introduction of bugs. If we would leave the suite running, but unsupported, it would quickly turn into a suite of broken junk. Not only would I not want that outcome for something we all worked so hard on, it would reflect badly on the company's ability to create great software - which is crucial under our current direction.

2) It's really expensive and we will not recoup those costs. The suite alone costs us several thousand dollars a month in hosting fees. Any time spent continuing to maintain the suite still costs us a lot of money. There is no way to recoup those costs and building in some kind of new business model to do so at this stage would be a tremendous (and probably futile) distraction. Investors in our newest round provided us with capital to focus on our new direction and we need to use those funds to maximize our traction under the new direction.

3) Flash is declining. Even if we would spent the money to continue to host AND maintain it, we would be supporting a platform that would potentially disappear in the near future, instead of building on platforms that will be around for a while (native mobile and HTML5). Sorry, but even if we were continuing on our old path, we would have eventually made the decision to retire our flash apps in favor of new HTML5 or mobile apps written on a platform that we knew would be around for a while.

There are other additional reasons too, but those listed are probably the most important. I hope that helps explain the situation a bit better.

New URL for the Aviary suite: advanced.aviary.com

Hi Aviators! Over the last few months Aviary has moved in a very different direction from its advanced suite of flash tools. As we continuously make modifications to the site (and especially the homepage) to support the new developer-focused direction, we struggled to still make it super clear to our existing users about how to access the current suite of tools, without diluting our message to our developer audience.

We realized that in trying to support two very different products on the homepage, we aren't actually doing a particularly good job at helping either one out. So rather than try to continue to cater to two different audiences on one page, we're going to split them into their own individual websites.

1) http://www.Aviary.com will be exclusively targeted for developers considering our embeddable photo-editing apps. We are going to deprecate developers.aviary.com (since all of the content from that site will be incorporated into www.aviary.com).

2) http://Advanced.Aviary.com will now be the new URL for our advanced suite of tools.

This will help make everything easy to find and mean that each product can have its own completely separate website (including look, feel and marketing copy). We feel this is the right approach, especially considering it has worked for us with AviaryEducation.com.

You can go update your bookmarks now. As a heads up, there's a new Aviary.com homepage coming out in early January that will take this change into account, so at that point you will probably want to start using Advanced.Aviary.com as your Aviary homepage if you only use our advanced suite.

As always, cheerio and Happy Holidays!

Avi

The Weekly Birdbath for August 20th - 26th

August 20th - 26th, 2011

by Cobra405/Mizagorn/Redstar/Mpeutz

So complex, yet very easy to listen to, we would like to play AlenVan's Seeing tomorrow for you:

Beanepatch

One thing we really like about Aviary is watching artists grow. One such artist, Beanepatch is one we enjoy keeping an eye on. You never know what he will come up with. His sense of humor is contagious, his love to create unwavering and his enthusiasm touches everyone. Always up for any challenge and a really nice human beane (someone has been hanging around mizagorn for too long) we want to draw attention to Beanepatch this week because he has over 1100+ creations and each one is as unique as he is. Stop by his gallery, its a blast of color and imagination. Glad you're here BP! Some of our favorites:

Try this really cool challenge presented by Bheid that can be as complex or as simple as you like. Here is a taste to whet your creative appetite:

We are trying a new system with the Aviary mentoring program, hopefully this will speed things up a bit for anyone asking for a mentor. So if you need some help with any of Aviary's apps then head on over and bag yourself a mentor

There is a brilliant new web comic being created on Aviary by TheDoctor7777 and two (as yet mysteriously unnamed) co-creators, by the name of Young Mr. Arthur Gashlycrumb. It's about a lonely boy who is being raised by his Auntie in her spooky old mansion. It's dark, it's funny, the drawings are amazing and there is something scary in the garden. You don't want to miss this so be sure to tune in.

There is an awesome new tutorial from Alpha13wolf on how to make clouds with Peacock. This is an adaptation of the steps he posted in the forums. Definitively check it out and post your cloud creations in the forums.
