The Making Of Santa Fe

Olivia Schafer is an artist living in Brooklyn, NY. She’s also a member of Aviary’s Product Team and the creative mastermind behind our new sticker pack Santa Fe, which (you guessed it) is inspired by its namesake. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how Olivia designed this collection of desert-themed stickers.

-

The idea for Santa Fe came from my childhood growing up in a small town outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Even though I moved away 10 years ago to pursue my BFA in San Francisco, the desert resonated with me so profoundly that it continues to inspire my work.

Saying that New Mexico is inspiring simply because it is beautiful doesn't do it justice. It’s inspiring because the ground undulates when the sun beats down in the summer. The smell of sagebrush and drying chilies perfume autumn skies. Adobe houses sit quietly in the dead of winter like cozy refuges, smoke rising from their chimneys. You can see the passing of seasons in the dying tumbleweed that started its life as an unassuming young plant. There’s beauty in the everyday, like the texture of saddle blankets, kiva ladders and pottery, and the understated green of a cactus. And when you stare out into the expansive night, it makes you feel so very, very small.

Those quintessentially New Mexican scenes stir up a weighty feeling of nostalgia for me. I wanted to share a piece of those idiosyncrasies in the stickers. Here’s how I created the Santa Fe pack with that in mind:

1. INSPIRATION

My first step before starting any project is to collect references. These can come from anywhere and everywhere - photos I’ve taken myself, the internet, history books and even encyclopedias.

I tried to capture the earthy tones of the desert soil and use dynamic cacti textures to create embellishments that would complement a wide variety of photos.

2. SKETCHES

Every sticker in the Santa Fe pack started as a hand drawing. I made rough pencil sketches, which I then drew over with a thin micron pen. The final step was using Adobe’s Shape app to convert my sketch into a vector, making it really easy to pull into Photoshop.

3. COLOR

I applied the same technique I use for oil paintings when adding color to these stickers: adding layers upon layers of brushstrokes. I began by applying layers of shadows and midtones, then added areas of light, and finally finished up with highlights and accent strokes. I tried to focus on creating beautiful colors and textures, keeping everything loose, and embracing imperfections.

Voilà, that’s my Santa Fe pack and you can download it now in Aviary! I hope you have as much fun using these stickers on your photos as I did making them.

Aviary Beta Testing Now Available for iOS

We are pleased to announce that we’re opening up beta testing for Photo Editor by Aviary on iOS!

For over a year now, we’ve been taking advantage of Android beta testing through Google+ and it’s proven to be an invaluable resource. With the help of over 3,000 beta testers, we’ve been able to identify and squash countless bugs as well as improve and iterate on new features before they’re released. Starting today, we can now do the same on iOS.

Beta feedback is critical to Aviary’s development process. Not only does it help us polish up features before we launch, but sometimes it inspires us to build something completely new. Take our Blur tool, for example: Last June, our imaging team wanted to take our Blemish tool to the next level by changing the technology so that it made flaws disappear, instead of just camouflaging them. What they came up with was amazing, and our beta testers loved it. But we also learned that they missed the blurring functionality that the tool previously offered. So, instead of just launching the new Blemish, we added a second, brand new tool named Blur, giving users the best of both worlds. Everyone’s happy! We’ve learned dozens of lessons like this one thanks to our Android beta group and we’re excited to extend the beta program to iOS as well.

Here’s how the program works:

  • Start by requesting to become a tester here (be sure to enter the same email address you use for your App Store ID). We’ll get you setup in our system shortly after receiving your info.
  • You’ll be notified via email when a new beta is available. At that time you’ll also receive some instructions for getting the beta installed to your device and how to submit us feedback.
  • That’s it!

So what are you waiting for? Sign up for our iOS beta group today. As a beta tester, your voice will be heard while we’re still in the development process—this will help shape and influence the way our new features evolve. If you use Photo Editor by Aviary on iOS and are interested in becoming a beta tester (and gaining exclusive access to upcoming features!), simply enter your email here.

All Aviary web integrations have been upgraded to V3 of the editor

As of January 16th, all v2 web integrations have been upgraded to v3 of the Aviary editor. Everything should transition seamlessly in your integration, but please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

Required changes for V3

1. API Keys are now required. If you don't have one yet, you can grab one from aviary.com/web. As soon as we officially make the switch to v3, any integration missing an API Key will no longer work.
2. If you are an existing Premium partner using our high resolution service, make sure you have updated to our new high-res API; the old one has been deprecated as of today. If you're not sure (or if you have any questions), email us right away at partners@aviary.com.
3. As a reminder, hardcoded URLs for the editor are no longer supported. Please make sure that you're pointing to http://feather.aviary.com/js/feather.js for http, and https://dme0ih8comzn4.cloudfront.net/js/feather.js for https to ensure that you'll always have the latest version of our editor. If you need to continue using a different url for any reason, get in touch so we can work with you to support it.

Thank you.

Aviary for Android Beta Test

We're excited to announce our new Aviary for Android Beta Testers Google+ community! If you're an Android user and interested in gaining early access to new builds (and letting us know what you think), we'd love you to join. Follow the steps below to opt into the program:

1) Join the Aviary for Android Beta Testers Google group here (note: make sure you join using the same email you use to access Google Play).

2) Click here, then click Become a Tester to allow beta downloads (note: you'll need to be a member of the Google+ community first before you can complete this step).

3) Download Aviary from the Google Play store to update your app to the latest beta version.

Once a beta tester, you'll begin to receive updates automatically as they're released. Simply use Aviary like you normally would and tell us about your experience. You can leave us feedback in the Google+ community by clicking here, then submitting a post using the "Share what's new…" box at the top of the page.

As a beta tester, some of the updates you'll receive may seem small, but from a coding perspective they're huge. We're in the process of revamping the back end of the app to improve stability and to set the stage to be able to bring you exciting new features later on. For this reason, your feedback on both functionality and performance is extremely valuable. The more feedback we receive, the better Aviary for Android will be!

If you have any questions or comments, feel free as always to email us at support@aviary.com. Otherwise, we hope to see you in the beta community!
