What the Heck is a Hackathon Anyway?

We’ve been building up to Photo Hack Day 3 for a while now, and figured it was probably time to explain what exactly a Hackathon is all about. Note: If you’re already convinced, click here to sign up! Otherwise, read on.

A Hackathon can be described as room full of driven developers and designers, each trying to build the next big app in 24 hours. It’s a veritable hot-box of creativity. For obvious reasons, our Hackathons are photo-centric which helps focus their scope and keeps the post hack demos visually interesting.

We know 24 hours can seem like a short amount of time, so we’ve put together a list of API’s you can use to help get your ideas off the ground. You’re not limited to the API’s on the list of course, but a number of them do offer a prize for best use of their API.

Come Photo Hack Day, you’ll find yourself in the company of passionate evangelists for these API’s, each excited to answer any questions, and troubleshoot any problems you might have.

It’s also a great networking opportunity. Not only are you rubbing elbows with company reps from the likes of Facebook, Tumblr, Flickr, and Aviary ;) but you’ll also get to show off your hacking and design skills to an audience of your peers.

Don’t have any hack ideas? Join a team! We’ll be posting hack ideas up to and throughout the day of the event.

Let’s not forget about all the free food, free beer and general camaraderie.

In short, a Hackathon is a 24 hour coding marathon with refueling stations at every checkpoint, and helpful devs and evangelists cheering you on along the way.
