The acoustic bass is a bass instrument that was first developed in the mid-1950s, but wasn't popularized till the 1960s. This instrument is commonly constructed out of a hollow wooden body, with four strings attached, which are normally tuned E, A, D, and G. This octave is the lowest four strings of a regular 6 string guitar, which is also the same tuning as an electric bass guitar. If you're not familiar with this instrument, just imagine if an acoustic guitar and a bass guitar made sweet love. This is the result:
